Emir Suljagić was born in 1975 in Ljubovija. He grew up in Bratunac, from where he fled with his family to Srebrenica in May 1992. He was seventeen years old when the siege of Srebrenica began.
Since 1993, he has worked as a translator for the United Nations Military Observers (UNMO). Since 1996, he has written for the magazine Dani . From 2002 to 2004, he reported for Dane and the London-based IWPR from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.
He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo and received his doctorate in 2009 from the Institute for Peace Research and Security Studies in Hamburg. He served as Minister of Education and Science of the Sarajevo Canton.
He is engaged in civic and political activism.
