Grigori Kanovich (1929) is a Russian and Lithuanian writer, translator, playwright, poet and screenwriter. He was born into a family of tailors, who followed the Jewish tradition. Yiddish was his native language. In 1953, he graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Vilnius University. He began publishing in 1949. His prose in Russian is almost entirely dedicated to the life of Lithuanian Jews. For his services to culture, he was awarded the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, 3rd Order, one of the highest Lithuanian awards, in 1995. He is the recipient of the Israel Writers' Union Award, and for highlighting humanistic values ​​in literature, he was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize in the field of arts and culture in 2014. In 2020, he received the EBRD Literary Award for his novel Satan's Charm .
