Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (1991, Nieuwendijk, Netherlands) uses the gender neutral pronoun they. They grew up in a Calvinist-Protestant family in North Brabant before moving to Utrecht. For their first collection of poetry Calf's Fleece (Kalfsvlies), they won the C. Buddingh Award for the best debut poetic work of 2015, and the newspaper De Volkskrant declared them literary talent of the year. For the world bestseller The Discomfort of the Evening, they won the Booker International 2020. In addition to writing, the Rijnevelds work on a dairy farm.
