Henning Mankell (1948–2015) is the most widely read Swedish crime novelist. He is best known for his novels featuring detective Kurt Wallander, as well as for his children's books and his political activism, which began with his participation in protests against the Vietnam War. He was also a vocal opponent of the Portuguese colonial war in Africa and apartheid in South Africa. The BBC has made six films based on his novels, starring Kenneth Branagh.
