Max Bergholz (b. 1973, Pittsburgh) is an associate professor in the Department of History at Concordia University in Montreal, where he teaches the history of nationalism, violence, and the Balkans. For his book Violence as a Generative Force, he received the Joseph Rothschild Prize, awarded by the Harriman Institute of Columbia University for an outstanding book on Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, Central Asia/Turkey, Central Europe, and the Balkans, which pays special attention to issues of ethnicity and/or nationalism. In 2017, the American Historical Society declared the book the best debut in European history from 1815 to the end of the 20th century, awarding the author the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize, one of the most important prizes in the English-speaking world in the field of European history.
