Robert J. Donia

Robert J. Donia received his graduate training in history at the University of Michigan (M.A. '74; Ph.D., '76). A research associate at U-M’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies and member of the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies Advisory Council, he is the author or co-author of several books on Bosnia and Hercegovina. Donia retired as resident vice-president with Merrill Lynch in 2000. In recent years he has used his Balkan area training to provide briefings to U.S. National Guard and Army units preparing to deploy to Bosnia and Kosovo. As an expert witness for the prosecution at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, he has given testimony in several cases, including that of Slobodan Milosevic. Donia's publications include Radovan Karadzic: Architect of the Bosnian Genocide (2015), Sarajevo: A Biography (2006), and Bosnia and Hercegovina:  A Tradition Betrayed (with John V. A. Fine, 1994).
